why do people automatically assume a pet store sells dogs?

Question: why do people automatically assume a pet store sells dogs?
ok, so i was on a chatting website and all i said was i know someone who owns a pet store, i never said they sold dogs or anything because the don’t and all of a sudden i got like 500 people saying “EW they sell puppy mill puppies” and “pet stores are disgusting!” and the same thing over and over! (while i agree that most are horrendous i think there are some good pet stores out there!) i told them they don’t sell any animals but they didn’t even bother to read what i was saying, as soon as they saw pet store they all pounced on me like i was a plague! so why do people assume that a “pet store” sells animals? especially if they know nothing about it I.E. its name or location!?
Remenisse- lol no i don’t mean Inland Empire, in Latin i.e. stands for “id est” which translates to “that is”. The other abbreviation is e.g. which is “exempli gratia” and that translates to “for the sake of example” or just “for example”.

The “pet store” imagine has been damaged completely by those that DO sell the puppy mill dogs (and deny it too). Hard to overcome a bad image.

    I know there is a couple stores that don’t sell dogs from puppy mills. But a lot of them do (petland) so they just assume. Petco is a good one (the one by me) Every month they take in about 4 or 5 dogs and 4 or 5 cats from the shelter and put them up for adoption in there store.

    Because it’s called a “Pet Store” and a DOG is a PET.

    Because most pet stores do. If they don’t, good for them. Hopefully they don’t start.

    But I think you mean feed store. Feed stores sell pet supplies, but never pets. Pet stores usually sell pets. I don’t know of one (around me) that doesn’t sell pets.

    EDIT;;
    @Kat: Petco has other animals (reptiles, rodents, and birds) and it’s very likely that those animals come from mills. There ARE other pet mills other than puppy and kitty. That’s why all my animals just come from rescues or right from the breeder.

    Next time try using the term pet supply store, people handle that better, and it clarifies that they sell supplies not pets. Technically a pet store would sell pets, and a pet supply store would sell supplies. It will save you from being mauled by people who don’t take the time to read the whole post.

    Does I.E. mean Inland Empire? lol if so, I live there. Anyway I only get on someone if their buying a puppy from a pet store, (like Barkworks in Riverside). All they sale is puppies and their puppy mill puppies. I got 2 of my dogs through rescues that do adoption fairs on weekends at Petco and PetSmart and some pet shops do the same things but few do. The people who “poo pooed” your friends pet store are just ignorant and don’t realize most normal pet stores sale pet supplies no dogs lol.

    Some pet stores have the dog cages in the back, and the name, PET store… kinda follows
