Am I throwing my degree away by working in a pet store?
Question: Am I throwing my degree away by working in a pet store?
I have two degrees in the Marine Science field, and ever since college I have been working in jobs that are stressful for different reasons. Either I do tough things out on boats (like catching sharks and identifying them), or stressful office jobs (consulting work). The third type of work I have experience in is lab work which I enjoy the most. I am a female who is 29 and single and I am hoping to settle down at some point. Plus , I am getting to the point where I need to start deciding what I want to do. I think I am leaning more towards lab type jobs in my field. The other two types of jobs (office consulting and boat work) haven’t been my cup of tea and I don’t see myself trying to competitively move up in either of them. I am a traditional woman and you have to be very very tough in both settings to move up. Plus I have found that many marine science jobs are based on contracts and grants and I have spent most of my life moving from job to job after they run out of money.
After thinking about it a while, I found this large pet store online located in my city that has a large salt water aquarium section and they seem to need an expert in that area. In a way I think this would be a nice change. It is something I could stick with and move up in, without having to bump elbows with others, and plus I can use my marine science knowledge to good use by helping customers. I will see the results right before my eyes unlike with my other jobs. This type of work will be similar to what I have done in labs in the past. It would also be a good job to where I can be more settled in the city I live in and have a good social life instead being away from my apartment for three weeks on a boat at a time. I could see myself having a job like this for a while and then perhaps cutting back on hours after having kids.
I am just worried that I am throwing my degree away. I am going to be embarrassed to tell my parents “I work in a pet store”. I am wondering if I am overqualified and if the pay won’t be good.

Degree is worthless if you are unhappy. If you have happiness and peace in life the you’ve won most of the battle.
You can use your knowledge to help in many ways.. degree is not just for money. It is mainly for knowledge, but unfortunately it is seen as a means to an end. Depending on how you use your knowledge to help animals will say if you are throwing your degree away or not.
Good luck
Research paper: Finally done! Adopting vs. buying dogs at the pet store?
Question: Research paper: Finally done! Adopting vs. buying dogs at the pet store?
As you all may remember, I asked a couple of questions on my research paper in the past couple of months reguarding Adoption vs. Buying pups from the pet store. First, I want to than you because I got some great ideas as well as a great title with the community’s help!
Also, someone asked if it would be available to see when I’m done, and I’ve decided to post it so you all may read it and give me your added input and thoughts to improve it if needed. It was hard to not repeat “Pet store” “Puppies” and “Puppy mills” along with other things, so hopefully it will turn out alright. It’s due tomorrow, so this is the last chance I have to change it.
Thanks once again, and here’s a link:

The only way you can view it is to download it unfortunately, though. Hope it works.

I want to open a pet store….?
Question: I want to open a pet store….?
Hey, so I’ve been thinking about what I wanted to do with my life… I’m 17 currently… I was thinking of becoming an animator… but then Id have to move to a totally different country and leave all my family and friends behind ![]()
All my life Ive Loved pets… especially dogs
so I kinda had a brainstorm (Is that what you call it?): What If I opened a pet store… Like in a high class area in Toronto like the Shopping district or somewhere cool in toronto
And my pet store would be high end… Id sell like cute collars and coats and halloween costumes at winter time… Id sell those little gourmet treats and cupcakes and the store would look very classy and elegant… Now I know what your thinking… “dogs from pet stores come from puppy mills” and “theres already a million High-end pet stores”… but what will make this one different is I want to have 2 big screens on the wall One with Pictures and Bios of dogs in the local shelter and the other with pictures of cats at the local shelter… the customer could come in, pic a pet(S) and buy his supplyes and then go to one of the local shelters to pick up his pooch or feline
…is that a reasonable idea??? I would not be selling fish or hamsters…the only living creature in my store would be my own dog
I think its great because people wwho already have dogs can shop there or people who are looking for a dog can shop there AND save a pets life!
obviously I want to work hand in hand with 1 or more local shelters
On the front of the store I would advertise that you CAN buy a dog/cat at the store… they would come in thinking they will be getting some puppy mill dog when in fact their helping the shelter pups and cats

You would have to have a lot of advertising and stuff to make it successful because there are so many pet stores already! Maybe if you did grooming for the dogs too, and like a pet sitting service, as well as the pet store and all of that, it may workout better. People are always looking for a grooming place to bring their pet!
