does a “feeder” rat really make a good PET?

by Scott Kinmartin

Question: does a “feeder” rat really make a good PET?
i have wanted a rat for a very long time and i finally got around to it. well i bought a “feeder” rat from the pet store. i have heard a lot of rumors that they do not make good pets. how true is this though? i’ve looked on petfinder.com before i purchased my rat but there were no local adoptions available. also i’ve checked into fancy rat breeders but there are no breeders around here for fancy rats that’s for sure. i am ALL about animal adoption and am a strong advocate. i just didn’t have the resources to adopt a rat. anyways, the rat i got is so sweet she doesn’t bite and she lets you pet her. however she is very skittish about being picked up when i have to clean her cage and such. i just don’t get how she is still skittish after i’ve pet her for an hour and talk to her very softly 3 times a day for the past week since i’ve had her. is she going to be like this because she is “reptile food” i do not want to give her back to the pet shop because of course she’s going to be fed to some reptile..she is way to sweet for that. any tips to socialize her more? thanks
also i have tried hand feeding her but she will not take it from my hand. she eats when i am not around

Two of my BEST rats were feeders from crappy pet stores. But my worst rat was also a feeder, so you can’t say they’re all bad or they’re all good. It’s hit and miss.

Prika was my first rat, and she was a happy, healthy, loving rat for two years before she succumbed to myco. She would sleep with me in bed, share food with me (I’d give her like, five cherrios, and she’d always nudge one or two back to me), she was the only rat I’ve ever had that actually enjoyed a bath, she was litter trained very well. I never had a single problem with her (until the myco).

Similarly, Victoria is just as well behaved. She knows her name, understands “No”, “Stay down”, “come here” and “Go back to your cage”. She’s currently learning “stand up” because she has a tumor on her tummy and it’s a lot easier to see when she stands as opposed to me handling her.

Anyway. My worst tempered rat, Squeak, was a great escape artist, a picky eater, and loved to bite very very hard (lots of blood was lost over that little one!). I had her for nearly a year before she got myco, and even in that amount of time I was never able to tame her.

It can take a week or so for your new rat to start getting used to her, and if she wasn’t socialized at the store it can take even longer. The younger she is, the easier it is to tame her. Hold her as much as possible, talk in soothing/nice voices, don’t yell at her (when my rats do something bad, I bop them on the nose a little bit and say “No” firmly.), and don’t feel offended when she’s afraid of you. It’s just her nature to be afraid of big human-y things.

Does it bug you when people really “enjoy their food”?

Like when my mom eats she says “mmmmhmmmm this is good, very very good” like after every bite..its annoying..

is that just a pet peive of mine or do you think its annoying too?

Question: Are you scared of the Pet Food Recalls? Do you really know what’s in your pet’s food??
My hearts goes out to all those that were effected by the Pet Food Recall. I have 5 cats of my own and would be devastated if what I fed them led to their death.

Here is a link to a very interesting video titled
