Question: I want to open a pet store….?
Hey, so I’ve been thinking about what I wanted to do with my life… I’m 17 currently… I was thinking of becoming an animator… but then Id have to move to a totally different country and leave all my family and friends behind
All my life Ive Loved pets… especially dogs so I kinda had a brainstorm (Is that what you call it?): What If I opened a pet store… Like in a high class area in Toronto like the Shopping district or somewhere cool in toronto
And my pet store would be high end… Id sell like cute collars and coats and halloween costumes at winter time… Id sell those little gourmet treats and cupcakes and the store would look very classy and elegant… Now I know what your thinking… “dogs from pet stores come from puppy mills” and “theres already a million High-end pet stores”… but what will make this one different is I want to have 2 big screens on the wall One with Pictures and Bios of dogs in the local shelter and the other with pictures of cats at the local shelter… the customer could come in, pic a pet(S) and buy his supplyes and then go to one of the local shelters to pick up his pooch or feline

…is that a reasonable idea??? I would not be selling fish or hamsters…the only living creature in my store would be my own dog

I think its great because people wwho already have dogs can shop there or people who are looking for a dog can shop there AND save a pets life!

obviously I want to work hand in hand with 1 or more local shelters

On the front of the store I would advertise that you CAN buy a dog/cat at the store… they would come in thinking they will be getting some puppy mill dog when in fact their helping the shelter pups and cats

You would have to have a lot of advertising and stuff to make it successful because there are so many pet stores already! Maybe if you did grooming for the dogs too, and like a pet sitting service, as well as the pet store and all of that, it may workout better. People are always looking for a grooming place to bring their pet!

Question: Pet Store Management Questions?
What is the monthly cost for a good sized pet store? I am thinking of owning a pet store and want to know how much how much it would cost monthly which is including buying pets and supplies and paying
employees. I would want to breed the pets so not as much do I need
to know how much it is to buy them then to paying monthly costs like mortgage. Also, what is a good number of employees and how much should I pay them? Overall how much money could I make and how much would the monthly costs for the pet store. Thank you to all!

P.S. What do you think of this name for it? “Liz and Cam’s Pet store.” That is my cousin and my code names.

P.P.S. What do you think good gallon sized cages for all types of pets are? Are ten gallons enough for everything from hermit crabs to

To lease/purchase the space in which to open your store will vary place to place. It could cost anything, really. From $ 1000-$ 10,000 for high end real estate.

1. Most names do fine. Yours proposes a close, homey feel. I like it.

2. 10 gallon tanks will work with small rodents. Rats and larger will do better in wire cages, as would guinea pigs, rabbits, and ferrets. A “big” reptile would meed more than a 30 gallon- depending on how long it takes to sell the animal.

3. This sounds like work for the business owner or marketing consultant. Anyway, prices vary with the area you are in, generally speaking. Even if prices were constant throughout the states there are too many breeds, species, and color phases available to list here.

4. Without a business model and estimated monthly revemue that the store brings in, no one will be able to tell you how much $ you could earn. When you open a private business, it can be really hit or moss and earnings can vary widely from month-to-month.

Breeding animals in store. I don’t think so. Rodents like hamsters and rats breed readily and easily but nothing else would be easy to breed. Fish breeding varies with the species depending on pH, light duration, temperature and M-F ratio. Birds can be even more dificult to breed and are very fragile as young chicks. Reptiles can ve just as difficult to breed as the more advanced fish- but again, it varies from species to species.

I did the google thing and all i got was 2 shops “global gecko’s” and “surrey pet supplies” who don’t sell live stock it seems!

bigappleherp.com iv gotten a few snakes many feeders and tons of items from them.. kinda cheap but not extreamly cheap. [expensiv on some things like tanks] these guys are realy reliable i used to buy my rat feeders and many of my lizards and insects thru them… never got a sick reptile. they have a bit of a viriety. so you actualy can window shop kinda GL

Question: why do people automatically assume a pet store sells dogs?
ok, so i was on a chatting website and all i said was i know someone who owns a pet store, i never said they sold dogs or anything because the don’t and all of a sudden i got like 500 people saying “EW they sell puppy mill puppies” and “pet stores are disgusting!” and the same thing over and over! (while i agree that most are horrendous i think there are some good pet stores out there!) i told them they don’t sell any animals but they didn’t even bother to read what i was saying, as soon as they saw pet store they all pounced on me like i was a plague! so why do people assume that a “pet store” sells animals? especially if they know nothing about it I.E. its name or location!?

The “pet store” imagine has been damaged completely by those that DO sell the puppy mill dogs (and deny it too). Hard to overcome a bad image.
